I've spent about 19 years managing teams in retail, and if I've learned one thing, it's this: people give their best to the places that see their best.
That's the heart of what I call the Incentive-Initiative. Good employees aren't found, they're grown. And the fastest way to grow them is to notice the effort, reward it on purpose, and make sure everyone knows what winning looks like on your team.
Three ways to start
Be specific with praise."Great job" fades by lunch. "You handled that upset customer with real patience" sticks for weeks.
Ask before you reward.Not everyone wants the same thing. One person wants a gift card, another wants first pick of the schedule. Ask.
Keep your word.A small reward you actually deliver beats a big promise you forget.
Try this weekAsk each person on your team one question: "What's one small thing that would make your week better here?" Write the answers down, and make one of them happen within seven days.
